CAN WE PLEASE TALK ABOUT THIS

image

CAN WE TALK ABOUT CBS AND RACE

CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE ASIAN WOMAN IN A LEADING ROLE

CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE BLACK MAN IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY

CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW NINE EPISODES IN AND THE CLOSEST THING TO A RACE JOKE WAS JOAN WHAT THE HELL IS THIS SHIT

RACIAL HUMOR: YOU’RE DOING IT FUCKING RIGHT

THAT IS ONE CLASSY FUCKING RACE JOKE

AND I AM PROUD OF YOU, ELEMENTARY AND CBS

#is that even a race joke though? #if he’d said English #… #hmm #STILL LOVE THIS POST #BECAUSE YAY TO NO RACISM (tags by that-misery-chick)

Nope, not a race joke. British isn’t a race. (Neither is English.) It’s a poke at a British stereotype, though — the idea that all British people are experts at making tea (and drinking it). But then, as I recall, E!Sherlock is more of a coffee person?

1) it’s not a race joke and 2) it’s not a dig at british people — it’s a dig at USians, specifically towards a CHINESE USian woman. it’s a white dude being snobby/superior about being white and british (and fandom LOVES this). to a chinese woman. about tea. where do you think tea was invented. hint: not britain.

sherlock ends up being wrong, but that’s not what this line in particular is about. so i don’t understand why ppl love it so much, except that what it really says is, ‘yay, (white) britain.’ and ‘you don’t know what you’re talking about, asian american woman.’

“think it’s because i’m quiet” — that’s a joke, of sorts, about racism and stereotyping, from a poc about his own experiences. (white people making jokes about racism…well, tread carefully, i guess, and you’ll probably still get stuff wrong.)

and, like, elementary might be better than some shows i could name, by having lucy liu in its main cast (and jon michael hill, to a lesser extent, because he is under-used and under-developed on the show) and not making all its characters of colour helpless victims, dead or villains. that still doesn’t mean it’s super great or progressive.

of all the episodes to crow about ‘diversity’, elementary fandom, 1.09 isn’t it. and the fact that the OP can call watson and bell, “THE asian woman” and “THE black man”, respectively, speaks a lot to its LACK of diversity, actually (guess which group you could not do that with. go on, guess).

it’s not a joke that sherlock whitesplains about ‘chinese culture’ and that this episode is crawling with white saviours. well, it should be a joke, at best, but it’s not treated that way on the show. and certainly not something that needs to be celebrated by fandom. i don’t mean people shouldn’t enjoy the show, but all this approval of how it treats race/racism and poc…is unearned and unnecessary. and flat-out wrong, when more subtle forms of racism and whiteness/white-gaze are upheld.

Elementary 1x05-1x06

FLAIL FLAIL FAIL

Here’s my thoughts/reactions

crossedwires:

watson: you speak mandarin?
holmes: not as well as i’d like. you?
watson: not as well as my mother would like.

*

when sherlock meets joan’s mother, i want him to win her over by speaking mandarin, which makes joan DOUBLY ANNOYED, because not only is she getting grief from her parents about her career choices, her mother is also very enthused about holmes’ speaking mandarin (badly) — “it’s cute!” or “at least he’s trying to learn!” — while watson’s mandarin is clearly better than holmes’, but still gets criticized.

i do like the canon acknowledgement that holmes does not speak it well. and i want to know if joan learned it growing up, from her mother (and maybe other relatives or friends) speaking it to her, or if she was sent to chinese school, or both. (or maybe she and her mom (and dad?) speak a different chinese language/dialect, and she was ALSO sent to mandarin school, but didn’t keep up with it.) or, like, if she was pretty fluent as a kid, but then went through a rebellious phase as a teenager and refused to speak anything but english. and if she regrets that now, because her mandarin is passable, but could be better and she knows she’s limited about certain topics because she just doesn’t have the words for it.

“You put your hair up when you want to look your best. You think it’s more flattering - you’re wrong of course, it’s a draw.”
